Now in its second year, the Art & Design Festival: Threads of Tomorrow celebrates creativity and innovation in fashion with a strong focus on sustainability.

Basic Embroidery Techniques with Mariam Chanaoui
Time: 11am to 2:00pm
Cost: $22pp

Description: Learn the basic stitches and methods behind embroidery with Mariam Chanaoui. This ancient needle work was believed to have started back somewhere between the 3rd and 5th century and was believed to be a symbol of power, virtue and entitlement. These days however, it’s a fabulous way to create small to large piece of art with thread and needle.

Brooch Making Workshop

Time: 11:00am to 12:30pm
Cost: $22pp

Description:

Create a contemporary textile brooch using the provided kit under the tutelage of the Macarthur Textile Network. Students will learn:

– Ruched work and manipulating various fabrics
– Simple stitches such as straight stitch, running stitch, bullion stitch
– Beading

The Art of Japanese Embroidery with Kris Smith
Time: 1:00pm to 4:00pm
Cost: $22pp

Description:
Join Kris Smith from the Embroiderers’ Guild Campbelltown and learn the art of Japanese stitching – Sashiko!

Sashiko is a running stitch technique used traditionally in Japan to decoratively reinforce points of wear or repair torn garments with patches.

The technique was used to extend the life of garments worn by fishermen and farmers and to provide warmth as a quilting technique.

Crown-making with Freya Jobbins

Description: Become the Queen (or king) you always knew you were and join Freya Jobbins in her drop in crown making workshop.
All materials supplied and better still, it’s FREE!

Work the Runway with Xander Khoury and Jamaica Moana
Time: 12:00pm
Cost: Free

Description: Master the art of the runway walk with event hosts Xander Khoury and Jamaica Moana of West Ball fame as they teach interested wannabe models how to develop their own runway style.

Jamaica Moana & Xander Khoury are two runway divas from the Australian Ballroom Scene. As winners of the category, they have learnt the skills and attitude to sell it down the runway. Jamaica has also walked as a muse and model for Australian Fashion Week including designers such as Nicol & Ford and Jordan Gogos and Xander has worked for Australian Fashion Week for over 4 years in different roles and capacities. The workshop will include a confidence building element, tips and tricks and a practice for the runway.
